Lahinch Surfing

History Of Lahinch Surfing

Thanks to it’s superb water quality and excellent waves, Lahinch has become an increasingly popular surfing spot, and not just during the summer, in fact you will find surfers from all around the world braving the waters of the Atlantic ocean in winter just to catch some of the awesome waves that come rolling in. Even if the surf at Lahinch isn’t up to much, there are other beaches jsut a short drive away that will normally step up to the mark.

Wether you are a seasoned surfer or looking to venture out on a board for the first time, Lahinch is the perfect spot for you. With surfboard rental available directly on the beach and surf schools offering lessons at excellent rates, Lahinch has everything a surfer could want. While you wlil find the best waves hit Lahinch between September and May, the summer still brings some great surf with it, and with a mile long stretch of beautiful sand, if the surf isn’t up then you will just have to kick back and relax on the beach.

Ireland’s biggest (and most terrifying!) wave was conquered by Lahinch’s very own John McCarthy, who runs Lahinch Surf School, along with a group of fellow crazy surfers. Aill Na Searrach has been crashing in from the Atlantic at the base of the Cliffs of Moher for thousands of years, and it’s location makes it possibly one of the most dangerous waves in the world to try and catch. In October 2005, the lads ventured out with their boards, and nerves of steel to tame Aill Na Searrach once and for all, one quote that sums up the experience came from John: “When we got there it was like a scene from The Lord of the Rings. You are at the base of this immense cliff and this swell is coming in at you. The waves were awe-inspiring. We knew they would be big, but we weren’t expecting them to be as big as they were.” Surfers from around the world are now contemplating taking on this mighty wave, as it really is a once in a lifetime experience.

Once your hard day’s surfing, or laying on the beach is over, then it is time to experience the great nightlife Lahinch has to offer, with the pubs serving hearty food, just asking to be washed down with a pint of Guinness. Most nights during the summer you will find traditional music sessions in the pubs, and with two nightclubs to choose from the night doesn’t have to end early if you don’t want it to.
