The Ring of Kerry or An Mhór Chuaird in Irish is part of the mystical & unspoilt region of Ireland that has attracted visitors for hundreds of years. The route starts in Killarney and heads around the Iveragh Peninsula passing through Kenmare, Sneem, Waterville (Charlie Chaplins favourite holiday destination), Cahersiveen and Killorglin. We have included information and pictures of all the popular attractions on the Ring of Kerry.

Popular stop off points on the Ring of Kerry Tour include Muckross House which was completed in 1843 and it pictured on the left, Staigue stone fort which dates from the iron age and is pictured in the center and Derrynane House, which was the home of Daniel O’Connell pictured on the right.

South of Killarney is the Killarney National Park which includes Ross Castle, Lough Leane, and Ladies View. Killarney National Park consists of over  25,000 acres of diverse ecology which includes the stunning lakes of Killarney. Below is a picture of Ross Castle which is located on the shores of Lough Leane and was built in the late 15th century.

More attractions on the Ring of Kerry include the Gap of Dunloe, the Bog Village, and Rossbeigh Beach.

The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass between the Macgillycuddy's Reeks and Purple Mountain. The gap is 11KM from north to south and contains five lakes. The Kerry Bog Village Museum, located on the beautiful 'Ring of Kerry', gives people an insight into how people lived and worked in Ireland in the 18th Century.

The village is the only one of its kind in Europe.

Other popular attractions include the Cahersiveen Heritage Centre, Skellig Experience and Molls Gap.

Moll’s Gap is a pass on the watershed of the Iveragh Peninsula and has fine views to the north of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks. It's a world famous panoramic beauty spot on the Ring of Kerry. Moll’s Gap is named after Moll Kissane who ran a small pub (or sibin) there during the construction of the Killarney – Kenmare road in the 1820’s. Moll was popular for her illicit home-made poitin or whiskey, which she sold in her sibin.

Some more recommended places to visit on the Ring of Kerry Tour include Torc Waterfall, The Blue Pool and the Ogham Stones,

Torc Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall that is about 4 miles from Killarney and is at the found at the base of Torc mountain.

It is 18 Metres high and offers spectacular views of the lakes of Killarney.

The Blue Pool is a magical harbour hidden in the middle of Glengarriff. Pedestrian access to the blue pool is beside Quills in the centre of the village. The blue pool is formed where the river meets the sea, a wonderful rocky inlet which is surrounded by lush vegetation.

There are a number of beautiful walks through the woods with views of the harbour that are well worth exploring

The Ogham Stones were the earliest system of writing to appear in Ireland. The language used was an early form of Irish but was script based on the Roman alphabet. The letters represented by sets of strokes cut across or on either side of a vertical stem line formed by the edge or corner of a standing stone. There is a very good example of these stones between Beaufort village and the Gap of Dunloe on the left hand side.

Construction of St Marys's Cathedral started before the great famine of Ireland in 1842. Built in gothic style It is one of the most impressive buildings in Killarney and is worth taking out the camera for. St Mary's Cathedral Killarney -  Ring of Kerry Tour of Ireland

Muckross Abbey dates back to the beginnings of Christianity in Ireland. The first monastery was reputed to have been built here by Saint Fionan sometime in the 6th century. What you see today are the ruins of a Franciscan friary which was founded here in the 15th century and are in very good state of preservation The monks of Muckross  Abbey were driven out in the 1650’s by the infamous Cromwellian forces.
