Some of the finest golf courses in the world are located in Ireland and some of Irelands finest golf courses are located on the West coast. These courses are set against the backdrop of the rugged Atlantic coastline.
This golf tour gives the golfer the chance to play on five of west Irelands courses as shown below.
 |
Course 1 – Doonbeg Golf Club |
 |
Greg Norman designed Doonbeg which derived its name from the Irish ‘Dun Beag’ which roughly means small fort. This course was officially opened on July 9, 2002 by an exhibition between Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Norman himself, which Norman won by 2 and 1.
The layout is unusual in that it has five par 3’s and five par 5’s – it measures 6,885 yards and is a par 72. There is a magnificent clubhouse and also the development has a five star accommodation hotel and lodges and also first class restaurant and golf-bar restaurant.
The Doonbeg project is believed to be the largest single investment in this part of Ireland and this amazing golf course has a magnetic appeal for thousands of golfers. Doonbeg is a priceless jewel between Lahinch and Ballybunion and one that simply must be played. |

Course 2 – Lahinch Golf Club |
 |
The Old Course at Lahinch, on the western coast of County Clare, was redesigned by Alaister MacKenzie in 1927 and is a visual stunner to rival any links course in the British Isles. Undulating fairways, heavily guarded greens and blind shots are among Lahinch’s challenges.
The town of Lahinch has often been referred to as ‘the St Andrew’s of Ireland’ – for the old Tom Morris connection and the passion for the game by locals. The golf club’s location in the town of Lahinch offers a similarly cosy feeling to that of the home of golf.
Lahinch is ideal for swimming, surfing and many other water sports. Lahinch has a whole variety of amenities and facilities. Throughout the summer period the whole place comes alive with dance and music, but the realm in the crown is undoubtedly its golf course. The Castle Course is also a very demanding test of golf for even the most serious of golfers. |
 |
Course 3 – Dingle Golf Links |
 |
Nestled on the edge of Ireland's dramatic southwest coastline, Dingle Golf Links is a very special place to visit.
For many it is the truly special people of the Dingle Peninsula that make their time here so memorable.
For others the quite breathtaking scenery of the peninsula revealing as it does its hidden bays, small fishing villages, glorious mountains and the Blasket Islands. It may be the Dingle's reputation for fantastic seafood and a night in one of the towns lively pubs enjoying traditional music and a turf fire. |
 |
Course 4 - Dooks Golf Club |
 |
A beautiful links course in Co. Kerry set amid the blue waters of Dingle Bay and surrounded by Slieve Mish, the Dingle Mountains and McGillycuddy Reeks. A truly magical location for a stunning golf course.
Dooks Golf Club is renowned for it's friendliness and invites all it's visitors to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Clubhouse. Even though it was extensively remodelled great care was taken to ensure it retained it's old world charm. The warmth of the greeting you will receive at Dooks is unrivalled. From the moment you walk through our doors you will feel immediately at home. |
 |
Course 5 – Ballybunion Golf Club |
 |
Situated in the Kingdom (Kerry), our stop takes us to the seaside town of Ballybunion, located on the estuary of the Shannon river where it sweeps into the Atlantic. In this seaside town is the world renowned 18-hole par 71 championship golf course. In fact this complex also hosts a tremendous 72 par Robert Trent Jones golf course called the Robert Trent Jones Cashen Course.
Ballybunion Old Course was made famous by a visit from Tom Watson in the seventies and he was so taken by its splendour that he visited many more times and in fact was made captain of this famous club in 2000. He spread the gospel in America when he returned and since then the famous Old Course has seen many high profile golfers and dignitaries such as Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Ernie Els, Payne Stewart, Mark O’Meara, Tiger Woods and President Bill Clinton to name but a few.
The Old Course exudes a majestic feel that simply cannot be compared to any other course on earth. With beautifully contoured fairways that tumble down through a blanket of grassy dunes, it’s no wonder these challenging holes have been consistently rated among the top courses in the world. |
Guide/driver: Michael Shanahan, former Captain of Ballybunion Golf Club (2005) who has extensive knowledge of all the courses on this website.
